Oral histories and archaeological evidence suggest that the Rubicon Springs area has been used by Native Americans for thousands of
years. In more recent prehistorical periods the area was seasonal occupied by the Washoe Tribe of the western Great Basin and the
Maidu groups from the foothills of California.
After California’s gold discovery of 1848-49, prospectors and survey parties traveling
on the Native American trails towards Lake Tahoe, soon discovered Rubicon Springs. The location was first established as having tourist
possibilities in the late 1860s by two brothers, George and John Hunsucker. The brothers built the first cabin and were the first
individuals to established ownership of the spring.
